Submission

The Assyrian Cultural Institute (“the ACI”, “us”, “we”, and “our”) welcomes unsolicited article submissions from leading academics, practitioners, established writers, journalists, and/or independent researchers for inclusion onto WWW.ASSYRIANCULTURE.ORG (“the Website”). Submissions should be original, exclusive to the ACI, and offer our readers an engaging and thought-provoking take on a cultural and/or historical subject.

Particular attention is given to articles based on new research. Prospective contributors to the Website are expected to meet all of the requirements set out in this guide before submitting their articles for consideration.

Submission Requirements

Acceptance

The submission of an article does not constitute an automatic or official acceptance for publication. Articles are put forward to the ACI for consideration and submitting authors will be notified of the outcome in writing within twenty-eight (28) days from the date of submission.

Compensation

Submissions to the ACI are done so on an unsolicited and voluntary basis. The ACI does not provide compensation for such work, unless otherwise specified by us.

Copyright

Prospective contributors agree to grant the ACI royalty-free worldwide license to broadcast, copy, create derivative work from, display, distribute, print, stream, or exploit in any way, in whole or in part, the content.

Editing

The ACI reserves the right to edit submissions— as necessary —for clarity, conciseness, grammar, style, substance, and length. Submitting authors may also be requested to revise their original work and/or provide additional information.

File Name

Submitting authors are required to export files using the following naming convention: Firstname-Lastname-Title.docx.

Images

The ACI welcomes the inclusion of images and other supplementary material. Prospective contributors are expected to provide proof of either copyright ownership, written permission from the copyright holder, and/or public domain/creative commons license.

Submitting authors must supply the material in the following file format:

  • File type: .JPEG or .TIFF

  • Resolution: 300 DPI

Originality

An article submission to the ACI will only be considered on the basis that it is an original work and does not duplicate any other previously published work. Further, the article must not be under consideration for publication or be published elsewhere.

Prospective contributors may, however, publish their work on their own personal blog or website one (1) week after publication on the ACI Website.

Peer Review

Once an article has been submitted to the ACI and has passed the initial checks, it may be assigned to at least two independent experts for peer-review. The identities as well as comments of the reviewers will remain confidential.

Plagiarism

The ACI reserves the right to screen submissions with anti-plagiarism software to detect and prevent plagiarism. Any submission may be screened, especially if there is reason to suppose part or all of the text has been previously published.

References

Submitting authors are required to provide a complete list of references and any other supplementary information at the end of the article in the form of endnotes. References should be cited using the Harvard referencing style.

Style and Format

Submitting authors are expected to adhere to the below style and format requirements.

  • File format: MS Word document (.DOCX).

  • Font: Times New Roman.

  • Font Size: 12 PT.

  • Word length: 1,000–2,000.

  • Dating: The use of Australian dating conventions is encouraged (i.e., 1 April 1932), but not a prerequisite. When representing a range between two dates, one should use an en dash (i.e., 1932–33).

When describing a significant time frame in history such as the 1600s, the following word style may be used: seventeenth century. A hyphen should only be used if the century phrase describes a noun (i.e., seventeenth-century writer).

As far as year notations are concerned, either of the following abbreviations may be used: BC “Before Christ” and AD “Anno Domini”. The use of secular year notations such as BCE “Before Common Era” or CE “Common Era” are also acceptable.

  • Spelling: The use of the Australian English suffix -ise instead of -ize is encouraged (i.e., organise, utilise), but not a prerequisite.

  • Quotations: Inverted commas must be used to indicate direct speech or quotations. When quoting a printed work, punctuation and spelling should be exactly as in the original.

When quoting parts of a longer sentence, an ellipsis (...) should be used between each part. Quotations that exceed four lines should be separated into a small type paragraph.

  • Phonetic Transcription: When rendering words from one language to another (i.e., Syriac > English); ensure you use the correct Latin letters.
